Last year, Juanes told The Philadelphia Inquirer about his early musical inspirations: "I came up in Colombia with folk music, singing with my parents and sisters. There were the rhythms of tango and bolero and cumbia.

Those were my strongest influences. Today, I listen to many new artists and learn while staying connected to my roots. The band's third album, Master of Puppets , was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums. Its eponymous fifth album, Metallica , the band's first to root predominantly in heavy metal, appealed to a more mainstream audience, achieving substantial commercial success and selling over 16 million copies in the United States to date, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan era.

After experimenting with different genres and directions in subsequent releases, the band returned to its thrash metal roots with the release of its ninth album, Death Magnetic , which drew similar praise to that of the band's earlier albums.

In , Metallica led the case against the peer-to-peer file sharing service Napster, in which the band and several other artists filed lawsuits against the service for sharing their copyright-protected material without consent; after reaching a settlement, Napster became a pay-to-use service in Metallica was the subject of the acclaimed documentary film Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, which documented the troubled production of the band's eighth album, St.

Explore music. Eric Cordier - Eric Cordier Osorezan When I started the label, I had no clear idea of what its aim should be. No doubt if you would have asked me back then, I would have said: to release good music. Maybe if you would ask me today I would give the same answer. What motivation should one need to run a record label? Change the world, save the environment, fight for your rights? I never comprehensively studied the various social and political backgrounds of everybody whose music I released and I never will either, but no doubt the vast majority of them does not have a strong political idea or social motivation behind whatever they do in music.

Parts of 'Dreamer's Ball' may appear on the 'Live Killers' album. Parts of 'Brighton Rock' appear on the 'Live Killers' album, ' Sheer Heart Attack ' was released as an audio track on the 'News Of The World' double disc reissue, and later 40th anniversary boxed set. This show was released on the Jazz Final bootleg as part of the 'Top Bootlegs' project. Parts of the 'Save Me' promo video were filmed at this venue earlier in the day. Footage from this show, or filmed before or afterwards, was used for the promo video for 'Another One Bites The Dust'.

Within months Queen changed management rather acrimoniously, and tapes of this show ended up in the hands of bootleggers.

The version heard is allegedly Roy Thomas Baker's mix. The band's first officially released live album would eventually come in , in the form of Live Killers. Thanks to Andreas Voigts for these scans, and countless others. Plenty of other LP and CD bootlegs sourced from the Sheetkeeckers LP have emerged over the years, many of which attempted to diguise the recording as other dates. The last one is a vinyl release from There is an extra 50 seconds of audience cheering after Liar than the LPs, and one second of Keep Yourself Alive is missing in the right channel.

Although an Elektra engineer is mentioned on the tape box, the vocal overdubs were almost certainly done by the band in the UK between tour legs in fact, Queen flew to the US on January 31, to rehearse for their first headlining tour there, four days after the date indicated on the box. The beginnings of Procession and Liar were missing and dubbed in from a cassette of the Sheetkeeckers LP. A recording from the airwaves has never emerged, but this is a direct transfer of the reel-to-reel tape intended for broadcast.

The quality is superb - until the official release this was the best-sounding version of the concert. An interview with the band was also part of the broadcast, along with studio tracks from a few other bands, including Nutz, who supported Queen on this tour.

With FM radio's often daring nature in the early to mid 70s, it's entirely possible that this tape was acquired and broadcast without the band's consent - the list of credits on the bottom of the cue sheet are dubious.

In order to fit both shows onto the same disc, they had to chop off a couple minutes of Liar. It is yet another version of the Golders Green and Rainbow material, most likely straight copies of the Godfather and Wardour bootlegs respectively. This show at the Rainbow Theatre was Queen's first "big" headlining gig. He was flattered but gracefully declined their offer. Their next task was to find a new manager.

Queen preferred to be with a major record company so the deal never went through. They knew Elton was a fan of theirs, and Reid readily agreed to manage them.

Sadly the US tour had to be cancelled for the time being, as the venues had been booked by the previous management, but Queen still had the States firmly in their sights. Keep Yourself Alive had been re-released in the US and was doing well.

The US tour would be re-scheduled, but meanwhile they had other things to think about. Queen had at last broken free from Trident — and the relief was enormous. The dark cloud had lifted and now they could concentrate on their forthcoming US tour and the next album. The album emphasised not only the incredible diversity of song-writing talent in the band, but also its wide range of vocal and musical talent. It was Baker who inadvertently provided the title for the album, at quite a late stage in the proceedings, when he showed the band some Marx Brothers films one evening, including A Night at the Opera.

They immediately agreed that this would be a great title for the album, especially given its occasional operatic moments! The album took four months to record, with the members of Queen often working separately but simultaneously on tracks and only getting together at the end of the day to share their work with the others. Brian awoke to hear that version being played on the radio. He thought for a moment he was still dreaming until he discovered Kenny Everett had appropriated the temporary version and was playing it on Capital Radio!

He later revealed that the lyrics were based on a dream he had about a prophet, and that unusually he not only remembered them, but also strands of the melody.

When he later performed the song on stage he had to have a separate guitar, permanently tuned this way, ready to use. Once it came to recording the vocals Brian worked with producer Roy Thomas Baker to put together a demo track for Freddie.

Freddie then came back with his own suggestions, and the haunting vocals were born. We like each song to be journey. If they are all the same, what is the point? Queen refused to pay anything. John and Roger were now contributing more to the writing on Queen albums, and adding variety to the repertoire.

Possibly as a response to the punk explosion, Mercury regularly acted destructive during the performance of "Sheer Heart Attack" near the end of the show.

It was on this tour that " I'm in Love with My Car ", featuring Taylor on lead vocals, was initially introduced to the setlist. This was also the first time in which " Love of My Life " was performed live, as a reworked acoustic version, and it became a highlight of the show almost instantly. The fans often took control of the lead vocals of this song, while Mercury conducted the audience as a choir. To make way for the new material, most songs from the first two Queen albums were omitted.

On the exhausting Jazz Tour in late for the US and early through Europe and Japan, most European dates were recorded and then later spliced together to make up the Live Killers double-album. This tour featured their "Pizza Oven" lighting rig which consisted of par lights arranged on a massive moveable rig above the band. It was nicknamed the "Pizza Oven" due to the massive amount of heat that the lights generated.

When introducing the song " Death on Two Legs ", Mercury often swore profusely about the band's previous managers which had to be dubbed over on the album. To some observers, there seemed to be a 'sex theme' deliberately integrated into the shows and this tour first saw the now famous Brian-Brian chant from the audience. Another unexpected feature of many shows was the requests for the seemingly inconspicuous song "Mustapha" by numerous members of the crowd.

On this tour, Mercury would sing only the opening few bars a cappella as on the album version, but the band would perform the song in full on the next few tours. On the Japanese shows, the band played " Teo Torriatte " with May playing piano.

During the date Japanese leg of this tour, Mercury experienced a variety of difficulties with his voice, as heard on several bootlegs of this leg of the tour. The string of concerts from April 21st in Kanazawa to May 2nd in Yamaguchi has been considered by fans as the lowest point in his live career.

The small-scale Crazy Tour in late , which was only preceded by a big-selling single and not an album, saw Mercury with short hair and it was the first time that Mercury played the acoustic guitar i. The band would typically drop "Brighton Rock" from the shows on this, and future, tours so that the guitar solo by May which had its genesis in "Son and Daughter" effectively became a stand-alone performance.

In some concerts, Mercury would appear on stage near the closing of the show sitting on the shoulders of Superman or Darth Vader although this would lead to some minor legality problems. Because of the many small venues used on this tour, the road crew often encountered problems when constructing the band's stages and so the stages, and sometimes the venues themselves, had to be altered substantially. One noteworthy show on this particular tour was their Boxing Day gig at the Concerts for the People of Kampuchea in London which was also filmed.

This tour also features Mercury delivering some of his finest live vocals in Queen's live career. The Game Tour in coincided with Queen being at their most popular with massive sales of their latest album both inside and outside of the United States. One surprise, however, to many concert-goers was the prominent moustache that Mercury had grown. Also Mercury's stage costumes appeared to be more local and less flamboyant e. T-shirts and sport shoes than in the earlier tours.

It is noted that a small selection of material from the Flash Gordon album was also included in the play list. The Game Tour in heralded in a largely untapped frontier for live rock music. In this case, Queen embarked on a short, yet frantic, tour of South America that included a number of dates at some of the world's biggest football stadiums. No major rock band had ever seriously toured this area of the globe.

Queen's album sales in South America had been quite high from quite early on in the band's career which provided the main inspiration for the tour. Overall Queen played to approximately , people in the space of just 13 concerts with the show at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil setting the world record for the biggest paying audience at , people.

As a point of note, football star Diego Maradona appeared on stage with the band in Argentina. In this era, Mercury appeared onstage naked except for some white pants. Producer Saul Swimmer asked Queen to wear the same clothes in both nights. The band, however, were angry with the producers, so they decided to ruin the continuity by constantly changing clothes during the course of the two nights. This tour was also the last in which Queen performed without additional musicians, singers or backing track.

The only playback part is and has always been the opera part in Bohemian Rhapsody, where the band is offstage. The Hot Space Tour of followed a controversial studio album. A notable concert of the tour was an open-air concert at the Milton Keynes Bowl near Northampton , which was released on home video several years later.

It is worth noting that this was the tour in which Queen started employing the services of another musician, a keyboardist, on stage.

Hence keyboards would become a prominent feature of Queen's live sound from this point onwards although the piano, played by Mercury, was still retained. Almost no material from this album would be played on future tours -- " Staying Power " saw some play early in the next tour, and only " Under Pressure " would become a lasting addition to the setlist.

Also one of the Japan gigs was filmed although it did not receive an international release. However some live footage from this Japan show, as well as some footage from an Austrian gig, is commercially available. The Boston Globe described it as a "mesmerising performance". This tour is the first time Queen did not perform in North America. Bookmarkable link File last modified: 11 August Follow. Mike Grose played bass at the first three concerts, while Barry Mitchell played bass at the remaining concerts.

At some shows, the band were probably billed as Smile even though they were named as Queen by this period. All subsequent concerts were with John Deacon.

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in Their classic line-up was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) and John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further.

I understand. Buy from Ace Free delivery in the UK. Track listing Show. It can only color and distort the original or, more likely, minimize any degradation of the sound available on the disc.

The same is true for the gear and the process used to add the music to the video. There's obviously more and better musical information on the vinyl. QED, MF! The MF does not represent Michael's initials, although certain people might argue the point.

The vinyl plain sounds better. By better, I mean more realistic. At least realistic in the context of a studio recording. I'm not pointing a finger at any technology here.

But, I do think that it shows, again, how really good pieces of musical art got "re-interpreted" when they were digitized for sale on CD and so on. Maybe the reinterpretation wasn't so great. So we all lost a couple generations of music? What's the big deal? I guess it's important to remember that for most people in the recorded music chain, this is all just a product like shampoo, breakfast cereal, or prescription drugs.

That all tells me that the best source of high quality archived musical art is vinyl. Tape may be better, but it degrades at a faster rate than vinyl and isn't very accessible or available.

Digital technology may even be superior to what's possible with vinyl, but garbage in, garbage out as they say. If you want to compare Tommy on vinyl to a digital release, try using one of the CDs released in the s.

Before the mids, CDs were mastered with as much dynamic range as possible to show off the new technology. It still won't sound as good as the vinyl, but it will be a lot closer. I think one of my CD's is from before It's been ripped onto a hard drive, so I'd have to go look for the actual CD and case to be sure.

Digital playback can suck in many ways and the overall development hasn't really been pursued to the degree necessary for best performance. I think a lot of that is because enough of the associated people really believe that the little details don't matter and that it's already good enough.

It's funny how some of those same engineers wouldn't ignore those same details in a telecommunications system - audio just is viewed with disdain for some reason.

Also, too many people in the "creative" part of the production process seemingly have little or no interest in making music sound like people singing or playing instruments. It shows. Could that be part of why the record biz ain't what it once was?

When you go for the lowest common denominator, you can't limit the extent of where that attitude flows, I guess. Anyway, I'm more convinced than ever that where it counts, vinyl is still better than digital because of the way the latter is executed. I'll also say that if you read the various online audio discussion forums, the vinyl enthusiasts seem to be happier and are having far more fun than the other guys.

That counts for something, doesn't it? Related to your comments about making instruments and voices sound real: Has anyone else noticed the same thing is happening to live performances?

Even in the smallest venues now bands process all the sound through a soundboard, which adds dynamic compression, and then sends the same mono channel to all speakers in the venue. No instruments are really heard live anymore. Even in my hometown last fall at a polka festival held in a rather modest tent, the sound was collected by a soundboard, mixed to mono, dynamically compressed, and then sent to four speakers.

My wife is a regular attendee at open mike nights and events of that sort. She says that almost every venue is exactly as you describe now. What's even worse is that's even true at bars and restaurants with any form of live music. It's so loud it's a wonder people don't choke on their food. Perhaps it's done that way so that you don't have to actually speak with your dinner partners. Just text or use social media to communicate, perhaps.

Haven't watched the video yet. I believe it's still in print, since my local record store just ordered one for me. Having just set up a new stereo, my first in decades, I love lists like these! What I do - here comes the Heresy - is look each one up on Tidal and mark them as Favorites. This means I can find them again.

The reason I am commenting here is not just to pull anyone's chain. So far I have only looked up the first 13 out of , and I am impressed by how many Tidal has in the "Master" format. That is their higher-res-than-CD format. All of which means I will have a lot to listen to. The downside? Since I'm not buying them I don't have the rationing in place that budgeting, finding, buying imposes.

I can OD too easily, if that is possible. Appreciate the list, but let me get this straight, the most contemporary album on this list is friggin' Joe Jackson? Shane's got some amazing records on Michael's list. Did you check the release date on every album? I should have just said what I meant. Thanks for this list, Michael. I know it will take a little bit of time to update the list, but can you put 2x45 next to the ones you prefer in that format?

In the case of Joe Jackson's Summer in the City, it was a bit digital recording, and and our new master was made at bits from the original DATs. The jump in quality over the truncated-tobits CD is mind-blowing! The recordings were to tape, but there was never an edited and assembled analog master made. It wasn't possible to use the tapes, but we were able too compile from flat high-res transfers directly from the tapes.

The results are similarly astonishing as even the original LPs were mastered from bit files. I would throw the Classic Trinity Sessions on the list as that is the one title that had me personally shut up about digital recording being pressed on vinyl.

Margo casts a spell on me when I spin it and I would have lost money if I bet it was originally recorded digitally. Gold Disc. Picture Disc. Other Special Records. Best magazine. Juke Box magazine. Record Collector Issues.

What made those songs so necessary to the album? This is where I was living more or less when I was writing most of the album. So I had to keep myself awake so I could finish a draft of it because it felt incredibly pressing and urgent and important.

this, along with the b-sides and outtakes, is an album that's gotten me through a lot. and despite it all, i still find myself coming back to it, amazed by its beauty. it's an album that's changed the way i've looked at and listened to music, and it's made me find one of my all-time favorite artists sam ray. i love this album, easily a favorite.
